GHAZNI :Afghan and US-led international forces raided militant compounds in central Afghanistan overnight, killing several insurgents and one civilian woman, the force said Wednesday.
The woman was killed by a bullet which ricocheted as the troops battled militants in the province of Ghazni, south of Kabul, which sees regular insurgent attacks, the US-led force said in a statement.
“The combined force assaulted three compounds… during the operation the force engaged and killed several armed enemy combatants,” the statement said without giving the number of militants killed.
“During this engagement, a ricocheting round killed a civilian female,” it added.
A senior Afghan police official told AFP on condition of anonymity that there were reports from the area that all of those killed were civilians, including two women, and said they were looking into the incident.
“Our people in the area have said that they were civilians but we have to investigate that,” the police official said.
Villagers in Giru district contacted AFP to say eight civilians were killed, but this could not be independently verified due to the remoteness of the area. Authorities refused to give an official comment.
The US military says insurgents often inflate or fabricate claims of civilian casualties to stir up anger against international forces, whom the militants want to leave Afghanistan.
